City Attorney

Generally, the District Attorney prosecutes criminal matters under the state statutes at circuit court in Waukesha County. The City Attorney provides legal services to the City officials and staff. The City Prosecutor prosecutes municipal ordinance violations in the City's municipal court.

You will be given a trial date. Prior to the trial, you have the opportunity to discuss the case with the City Prosecutor and attempt to reach resolution. The best time to talk to the City Prosecutor about your trial would be one hour before the trial begins in the courtroom. Yes. Municipal Ordinance 10.16.010 License Required: "No person shall operate a bicycle, as defined in Section 340.01(5), Wisconsin Statutes, upon any public highway within the City without first obtaining a license as provided in this chapter." Residents of the City of Brookfield may obtain a bike license at the City of Brookfield Police Department. They may either print the form below or fill out the form at the Police Department Lobby. The fee for obtaining a bike license is $6.00.

The property tax bills are mailed around December 10th.

Payment types accepted by the City include cash or check. Credit cards are accepted via the Waukesha County website at www.waukeshacounty.gov or click on the link below. Electronic checks are also accepted on the County website. Please note that there is a 3% convenience fee for credit card payments and $1.00 for electronic checks. City Hall is open for property tax collection Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. In addition, a drop box for payments is available in the north parking lot of City Hall. The City also partners with Tri City National Bank to assist with tax collections, particularly on days or hours when City Hall is not open. You can find information regarding Tri City collection hours in the tax bill envelope or look on the News and Announcements page starting in early December.
Taxpayers have the choice of paying in full or paying in two installments. Should you choose to pay in installments, the second installment is due to the Waukesha County Treasurer by July 31. Please mail or deliver second real estate tax bill installments directly to:

Utility bill payments can be made at City Hall, 2000 N. Calhoun Road in person from 8:00 a.m to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday or placed in the drop box adjacent to City Hall. Payments can also be mailed to the above address. Bills are mailed quarterly (March, June, September and December), and are due by the 25th of the following month. The City does not perform final readings for water/sewer bills for sales of property; buyers and sellers should have the utility charges prorated as part of the closing process. If you are currently on the Automatic Payment program or your bill is not addressed to “Current Resident”, please notify the Accounting office via U.S. mail, telephone, or email using the link below, to ensure that your utility account is removed from direct debit and the bill is mailed to the correct address.
If an installment remains due on a property tax bill, contact the Waukesha County Treasurer for payment options. If a parcel is sold, the address change for property tax bills is processed as part of recording the change in ownership of a parcel – no additional action is needed.

Dog licenses may be obtained at the CITY CLERK INFORMATION DESK or POLICE DEPARTMENT. They are due April 1st. Please remit a separate check to City of Brookfield - Dog License. Do not include license fee with your tax payment. PROOF OF RABIES IMMUNIZATION IS REQUIRED TO OBTAIN DOG LICENSE. Questions regarding your property tax bill should be directed to the Treasurer's office at (262) 796-6640. You can also e-mail any questions to: finance@ci.brookfield.wi.us; please include the tax key number (7-10 digit number preceded by the letters BRC in the upper right hand corner of the bill) in your message. Copies of paid property tax bills are available for a fee of $0.25. Please indicate where and when we can contact you to pick up the copy of the bill in your message. Alternatively, the Waukesha County Treasurer tax listing website can be used to obtain paid tax bill information.

The City’s sanitary sewer rates provide for an automatic credit for residential customers for the summer quarter (June-September) in that the sanitary sewer charges for that quarter are based on an average of the usage for the three previous quarters rather than actual water usage. Customers who have significant water use during other times of the year can apply to have a deduct meter installed, which will provide for sewer charges to be based on actual wastewater put into the sanitary sewer. Installation of the deduct meter is at the property owner’s expense. Applications for the separate meter can be made through the Accounting office at (262) 782-9650 or .

Highway - Drainage
|

It is the responsibility of the Highway Department to clean and maintain storm sewer inlets and catch basins within the City right-of-way. Residents should keep debris and leaves out of these inlets which will improve drainage in your area and reduce flooding during heavy downpours. If you have a blockage in your storm sewer or culvert, contact the Highway Department. (262) 782-5029

The City of Brookfield has placed a moratorium on ditch enclosure installations at this time. If you are having a problem with your ditch, please contact the Highway Department (262) 782-5029 to see if it can be reshaped for easier maintenance.

|
Sump lines can be discharged into the ditch line or discharged anywhere on your lot as long as it is at least 10' from your lot line. If you live in a curb and gutter area you cannot discharge directly into the curb line. You must place the discharge hose in your yard. Sump lines discharging into curbing cause severe icing problems in the winter and slippery algae in the summer. Contact the Highway Department to see if there is a storm sewer location on your lot where a connection could be made.

If you are planning to replace your driveway in the near future, contact the Highway Department as soon as possible to make an inspection of the existing culvert to see if it needs replacement. We usually can work around your schedule to replace if needed. Do not wait to call us when the contractor is doing the work. We need at least a 2 (two)-week notice for scheduling.

If the Highway Department performs ditch grading or repairs a storm sewer on your lot, we will try to repair the landscaping within 2 (two) weeks, weather permitting. We will landscape from April to October 15th. It is the responsibility of the resident to water and maintain the area after it is restored.

The Highway Department will repair or replace asphalt driveway approaches only if a culvert is replaced. It is the responsibility of the homeowner to repair or replace any driveway approach that is deteriorating.

Highway - General Information

No we do not. Residents can bring their yard waste to the Recycling Center or hire a licensed hauler to pick it up and bring it in. The City has a list of licensed haulers available to the public.

The Highway Department will pick up dead animals from the roads and road sides between 7:00 am and 3:30 pm., Monday through Friday. We cannot come on to private property.

The Recycling Center is open year round on Saturdays from 8:00 a.m - 5:00 p.m. In addition, from May through November, the Recycling Center is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.

Highway - Snow Control
|
|
The driver for each snow route inspects the route and determines where the flexible guideposts are installed. If Homeowners care to install additional markers they may do so. The guideposts must be flexible and/or break-away type (usually plastic or fiberglass). Metal stakes are not allowed. The City is not responsible for any damage to private markers during a plowing operation.

In Spring, the Highway Department will repair the damage to the lawn. The process includes topsoil, raking, grass seed and ground cover. Homeowners are responsible for watering the repair. We do not use sod. Homeowners must contact us to report the damage at (262) 782-5029 or email us at highway@ci.brookfield.wi.us

The City will repair or replace any mailbox that has been struck by a City snowplow. Paper boxes are not repaired or replaced by the City. Contact your newspaper provider for replacement paper boxes. Mailboxes that cannot be repaired are replaced with a standard black #1 mailbox on a 4 x 4 post. If the ground is frozen and repairs cannot be made we will install a temporary mailbox and return in the Spring to make permanent repairs.

Unfortunately this is inevitable during a plowing operation. It is the responsibility of the homeowner for clearing this snow.
|
|
|
During a general call-out, plowing or ice control operation, a priority has been established. Priority will be given to all main roads (Class I). All other roads (Class II) will be serviced as soon as main roads have been cleared and deemed safe. Since there is less traffic on weekends, the time frame to have all roads cleared may be slightly later. In most cases, this will mean that the streets will be passable. Clean-up, which includes widening, will be done as soon as possible after making the initial pass. Depending on what class of road the patrol worker maintains, the severity of the storm will determine the extent of attention the particular route will receive. The Department is responsible for both main roads and residential roads. Questions regarding patrol route coverage can be directed to the Highway Department at (262) 782-5029, Monday - Friday, 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. Voice mail will also take off-hour calls. Calls for emergency situations can also be directed to the Police by dialing the Waukesha County Communications Center at (262) 446-5070.

Cul-de-sacs present a special problem for snow removal crews. There are 382 cul-de-sacs and 64 dead-end streets in the City. Plowing in cul-de-sacs will consist of making either one or two passes to clear snow to allow residents road access during the early stages of the storm. Snow left in the center will not be immediately removed, but will be left until the driver returns to complete the clean-up stage of the plowing.

It is the responsibility of the homeowner to clear snow from fire hydrants and to ensure mailboxes are accessible to the mail carrier.

Highway - Streets
|
|
The Highway Department will start cleaning the main streets usually in March after the threat of snow has passed. Curb and gutter areas will be swept first due to DNR requirements. After these areas, we will complete the remainder of the City.
